D.M. BASS, INC.
In the early 1990s, D.M. Bass, Inc. realized it had piles of old metal cluttering its yard. The obvious question was what to do with such an unsightly mess? In response, Bass personnel went about collecting and gathering the material to determine what could be reused, salvaged or recycled. In the process they recognized that by cleaning and reorganizing the yard, they were also eliminating potential liabilities. That, in and of itself, was a major benefit.
But a cleaner yard would also make for a better working environment. Removing unsightly materials would open up the yard and provide extra space for performing additional tasks that could also be profitable. Surprisingly, cleaning up its own yard was a lucrative and prudent venture with the proceeds from the recycled scrap covering not 100 percent of the cleanup effort, but 113 percent. In other words, Bass made a 13 percent profit by simply improving its own premises.
At this time D.M. Bass was still a family-run concrete company with over 150 employees. It already had all the heavy and light specialty equipment necessary for recovery operations. Furthermore, the company owned 50 acres that were available for storage and the personnel to conduct asset management and recovery operations. With this history, an enviable safety record and a wealth of experience in land remediation, the company felt confident it could expand its operations and provide utility, cable and telephone companies viable asset management and superior recovery resources and services full-time.
Although Entergy was the first major utility company to realize how valuable Bass Asset Management & Recovery Specialists could be, Bass was also servicing other industries, like manufacturing, who had equipment, machinery and/or material in need of repair, or obsolete or discontinued assets that could be salvaged, reused or recycled. Many companies, like repair shops and supply houses, would have worn out parts sitting on shelves, or unusable materials and equipment stashed in corners of buildings. Such assets would typically be discarded as junk, and written off on company books.
However, where others saw junk, Bass saw opportunity. They realized that not only was there money to be made in recyclable material, but that most industries were not prepared to perform recovery operations. Such work would require special equipment like 20, 30, or 40-yard roll off containers. They would also need heavy equipment such as bobcat skid steers, manlifts and flatbed trucks. Key to this effort would be the personnel experienced in performing land recovery services from events caused by storms, erosion or deterioration. The solution: a company with 100 years combined experience to perform investment recovery of excess, outdated and/or deteriorated materials.
As its experience grew, Bass Asset Management & Recovery Specialists soon realized its potential as a company, knowledgeable in inventory organization, management and redeployment, that could convert down and/or damaged assets, useable parts or recyclables into cash. Moreover, utilities like Entergy would find such services invaluable, especially during catastrophes like Katrina, Rita and Gustav, as Bass and its dozens of 4-man crews removed hazardous materials so Entergy could do its repairs uninterrupted.
Just as impressive during this time was the fact that money was made for Entergy on the front and back end, as Bass cleaned up behind utility crews and later organized, salvaged and recycled retrieved aluminum, steel and copper from down poles, earning the company a significant financial return on each recovery assignment.
It goes without saying that Investment and Management are specialty services requiring the right personnel and resources. Unquestionably, Bass is your company for all seasons, a company that can turn your trash into treasure and your assets into revenue. |
